Eastbourne's MP, Josh Babarinde and Kiyomi from Willingdon Primary School, launch the 2024 Lightning Fibre Ice Rink
Kiyomi was the lucky winner of the Lightning Fibre school's colouring competition and joined Eastbourne's MP, Josh Babarinde and Lightning Fibre's CEO Stefan Stanislawski to cut the ribbon on the rink.
Free skating sessions have been provided for Forward Facing and Children With Cancer Fund, and Olympic skater Robin Cousins MBE will attend the rink on Thursday 12th Decmber. The Rink closes on 31st December 2024. The rink is fully accessible for wheelchair users, and there are a few SEND sessions available with no crowds or music, session is limited to 15 skaters. Forward Facing supports families in Sussex whose children are living with long-term or life-limiting conditions, complex disabilities. terminal illness or bereavement. CWCF grant wishes to children up to the age of eighteen, and their families, who have, or have had, cancer and who primarily live in East Sussex, Brighton and Hove.
Robin Cousins is a British former competitive figure skater who was BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1980. He was the 1980 Olympic champion, the 1980 European champion, a three-time World medalist (1978–1980) and four-time British national champion (1977–1980), winning all of these titles during his amateur career. Off the ice, Cousins has commentated on figure skating events for the BBC, and he assumed the position of head judge on ITV's Dancing on Ice show from 2006 to 2014. He has also appeared in theatre productions, including the West End.
Eastbourne News, the free community newspaper, has sponsored the safety equipment at the risk rink, whilst Lightning Fibre is the main sponsor for the 4th consecutive year.
