Back to Blogs

Hailsham Active CIC celebrated with Fighting Fit Women’s Boxing, who have been awarded a grant of £9,058 to help develop the Boxing session, which takes place at Hailsham East Community Centre, Vega Close, Hailsham BN27 2JZ. The grant was awarded by Sport England under The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Activity Fund, and covers items like equipment, coaching and hire of facilities.

Earlier this year, Hailsham Active set up, and sponsored, a weekly session for women in Hailsham East. Over 50 women expressed an interest in the session. The first session took place on 9th February 2022 with 12 attending. At the second session 22 women attended and that number was sustained at the third session on 23rd February. Demand is amazing and the session is going from strength to strength! Two further sessions have now opened up, due to demand, aimed at increasing levels of fitness, strength and agility, as well as friendship and support.

Hailsham Active is also helping the leaders of the session to become formally established as a not-for-profit entity, with a Board, to make the highly popular activity sustainable going forward.

Hailsham Active Chairman Steve Wennington said “Hailsham Active are very proud to see that the Fighting Fit activity is as highly thought of by a major funding body, as it is by local residents and ourselves. The support we are giving to Fighting Fit, is the kind of support we want to give to local sports clubs to develop their facilities and activities for the benefit of local residents. Active Sussex has been integral to helping us to kick start the session. We are also hugely supported by our partner, Lightning Fibre Broadband, in this role, so please, clubs, make contact if you need any help on activity funding, equipment or facilities.”

Hannah Isom, Fighting Fit’s founder said “I started Fighting Fit up in January with the aim to promote women’s boxing in the local area of Hailsham. Not only does boxing improve your physically well being but it also undoubtedly helps your mental health. As the founder of Fighting Fit I have seen the women that come along to my sessions both become fitter and stronger but also gain from the community of Fighting Fit, and feel stronger mentally. The centre has been absolutely amazing with accommodating us on Wednesdays and now also Mondays. I would like to thank everyone for their support over these past few months, from seeing my vision and helping me turn that into a reality in the community.”
